Hump Day

Waking up staring at the pale gold ceiling in Devon’s apartment for the third morning in a row, a tiny part of Jesse wondered again if it would really be so terrible to live with his brother for the rest of his life. He didn’t have much doubt that Wade and Devon were going to be long term, whether Devon was still fighting the urge to run or not.

Jesse knew Wade, and he knew that Wade was all in; he’d take every drop of commitment Devon would give him. He suspected that eventually, like the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon, Wade would wear Devon down and get his way.

As horrible as sleeping ten feet from where his brother was having sex with his best friend sounded, the idea of getting a good night’s sleep regularly just might be more important.

He thought about what Wade had said again. Dreams of a den when he slept with Devon, and dreams of wandering when he slept at home. Wandering, like he was searching for, oh, a den.

Jesse didn’t dream of searching when he was at home though. Jesse dreamed of his mistakes and the consequences they might have for everyone he loved.

For the first time, he’d woken before Devon. He got up, grabbed his clothes, and headed for the shower. He tried not to take up all the hot water, but it seemed like there was a lot, so he didn’t worry too much. The pressure was nice too. Maybe he could buy Devon and Wade a house and steal Devon’s apartment. Ha. Like Devon would go for that.

He came out to find Devon still in his flannel pajamas, sitting on the counter eating a bear claw.

“That looks like a healthy breakfast,” he observed.

Devon grinned and motioned to another sitting on the table across from him. “That’s why I got you one too. This week, I think we’re due a sugary mess of a breakfast at least once.”

“You not working today?” Jesse asked as he sat down at the table and grabbed the pastry. He motioned to the pajamas as his explanation for the question.

“It’s seven-thirty, and I don’t open till nine,” Devon explained.

Seven-thirty. Jesse blinked. “Seven-thirty. Like, as in before eight in the morning?”

Devon laughed and pointed at the clock, and sure enough, it was freaking seven-thirty in the morning. That was just wrong.

“So where are you off to today?” Devon asked, between surprisingly dainty bites of pastry.

Jesse, with his mouth full of almonds and honey, said, “I gotta go over to the flower shop.”

Devon thought about that for a minute. “Miss Vander’s?”

“It was,” Jesse agreed. “But she retired and sold the shop to Frank Anderson’s son.” He felt himself blush when he said it, annoyingly enough.

Devon quirked an eyebrow. “Frank Anderson’s cute son, I take it?”

Jesse almost choked on his food, prompting Devon to hop off the counter and pour him a glass of orange juice. After taking a long drink and catching his breath, he shook his head. “You’re a jerk.
